[GC 2018] Anthem: BioWare Intentionally Keeps It Under Wraps!

The decision to make the game somewhat rarely seen was the developers’ idea – Electronic Arts had nothing to do with their choice.

Let’s admit it, we haven’t seen much of Anthem outside E3, even though it is meant to be Electronic Arts‘ one of the major titles, and we can also expect BioWare to do something big after the somewhat subpar Mass Effect: Andromeda, too. However, we still won’t see much of it for a while yet, as Jonathan Warner, the game’s director, told Metro GamesCentral that will they wait until the right time to blow the doors of Anthem:

„Without being indiscreet, I think it’s really about our choice as developers wanting to bring something and show something that is more full-throated, if you will, at the right time. I think there’s always the temptation to show stuff early and because it’s new, and because we’ve been iterating on it in a significant way we as developers wanted to hold this a little closer to our breast for just a little bit longer, until we could get it to something like the demo that you see. It was a developer choice.

EA leadership, from the studio all the way up to the very, very top of the organisation have been so supportive of this process. And we’re lucky enough to have leaders who know that developing new IP is hard. As creators, it’s one of the most challenging and rewarding things you can do. But it is , and I can honestly say, with no BS, that the process has been hugely supportive. I’m not concerned in the slightest about our marketing, we’re gonna come out and blow the doors off this thing.”

Of course, they have to impress us somehow. Warner also told VG247 that Anthem will not get a beta, as those tend to become available shortly before the games arrive. Instead, it will receive a demo, which will be discussed at PAX (possibly PAX West at the end of the month).

What if you wanted to play solo? Let Warner answer this question: „The experience is different, but I don’t feel like it’s lesser. I’ve played it for a long time, and I feel the real magic of the game is when you’re playing with a squad. Because then you can pull off combos. When you see someone zooming over your head in a Colossus, there’s a moment of, ‘Oh, shit!’. I love that.”

Anthem will arrive on February 22 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The demo is possibly coming around December or January.
