MOVIE NEWS – Director Josh Boone made a significant step concerning his Interview With the Vampire remake for Universal Pictures. 2014, summer Universal Pictures bought the rights to author Anne Rice‘s entire The Vampire Chronicles novel series, which also contains Interview With the Vampire, Queen of the Damned and The Vampire Lestat.

Some weeks later, the studio asked Josh Boone, who is the director of The Fault in our Stars filmmaker to write and direct an adaptation entitled The Vampire Chronicles, which would be based on Queen of the Damned and The Vampire Lestat. It appears that the emphasis of this project has changed a bit since Josh Boone recently exposed the title page of his script for a remake of Interview with the Vampire.

The director displayed this photo of the script title page on his Instagram account last week, which exposed the title was, in fact, Interview With the Vampire, which will, of course, be based on the book of the same name, and The Vampire Lestat. Boone co-wrote the script with Jill Killington. They both wrote the script for All I Had, which is Katie Holmes‘ directorial debut gone to theaters last month. The script was dated April 2016, so we’ll have to see how the studio responds to this fresh rewrite.

Interview With the Vampire was first adapted into the hit 1994 movie of the same name, with star Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, who turns a demoralized plantation owner named Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt) into a vampire, after the wife if Louis is dead. The movie grossed $105.4 million domestically and $223.6 million worldwide, from a $60 million budget.

Eight years later, Queen of the Damned was adapted to the big screen, starring Aaliyah as the title character, Akasha, and with Stuart Townsend, who played Lestat. The rather bad movie performed much worse than Interview With the Vampire, taking in $30.3 million domestically and $45 million worldwide, from a $35 million budget.

What remains to be seen is if this project will develop into Universal’s monster franchise, which Alex Kurtzman is overseeing with Chris Morgan. The monster franchise wasn’t even in the works in 2014; it seems impossible to imagine Anne Rice’s characters crossing over with Universal’s classic monsters, especially since Tom Cruise, who played Lestat in the original Interview With the Vampire, is starring in the Mummy reboot. It’s also worth noting that Robert Downey Jr. was rumored to take over the Lestat character back in 2009.

It isn’t known if Josh Boone is still planning to direct this movie since he is also attached to two other high-profile projects. The filmmaker is attached to both write and direct The Stand for Warner Bros. and The New Mutants for 20th Century Fox, but it isn’t known when filming will begin on either of those projects.
